Imagine write a paper for me that you are writing an essay at school or in some evaluation process. Among so many words, one of them did not fit entirely in the line you wrote. So, what should be done? Well, in those cases it is advisable to separate the word into two parts by placing a hyphen (-) between them.
And then comes the doubt: where to put? You should not separate them anyway. It is therefore necessary to know the rules of syllabic division and thus to be able to write within the cultured norm of the Portuguese language. See below for these norms and apply them in your daily life.

In order to make a correct division, it must be borne in mind, in principle, that in every syllable there must be at least one vowel, without exceptions. For this reason, this norm becomes general. Know the practical rules now.
Do not separate
Diphthongs and tritongs
Words that have, respectively, two and three vowels together. In syllabic separation they belong to the same syllable.
Examples: cau-le, an-sia, di-nhei-ro, trei-no, des-mai-a-do, U-ru-guai, sa-guão, Pa-ra-guai, a- guou, whatever, etc.
Writers
They are consonant encounters, that is Syllabic Division , two consonants together, which have the same sound. Some should be separated, but others should not. This is the case of: ch, lh, nh, gu and qu.
Examples: chu-va, fa-cha-da, es-ta-nho, fro-nha, a-que-la, co-tei-ta, fi-lha, ni-nho, quei-jo, etc.
Consonant dating with L and R
When two consonants are together in the word and the second is l or r, there is no separation from them. Watch:
Examples include: glutamine, glomeraria, plaÂe, cla-va, pre-sen-tar, arabin, re-tra, re-gra, a-bran- dar, dra- gão, tra-ve, etc.

Initial consonant dating
If the word has two syllables together at the beginning, they are not separable. Understand.
Examples: gnós-ti-co, pneu-má-ti-co, mne-mô-ni-co, gno-mo, psi-có-lo-go, pneu-mo-ni-a, etc.
Word ended in consonant
In no case a word ending with consonant will have a syllabic division in which the consonant is isolated at the end. In this sense, the last letter joins the previous one.
Examples: sub-lin-gual, su-ben-ten-der, en-xá-guam, a-guen-tar, etc. They are separated by three vowels, but it is not the same as the tritongo. In these words, the formation is done with a vowel (a, e, o) + semivowel (i, u) + another vowel (a, e, o). Watch! Examples: prai-a, tei-a, joi-a, sa-bo-rei-e, es-tei-o, ar-roi-o, etc. NOTE: The formation of tritongo is different, being semivowel + vowel + semivowel: Paraguay ("u" and "i" are semi and "a" is vowel). Hiatus When there is a meeting of two vowels. They differ from the diphthong by the way they are pronounced. Examples: sa-ú-de, Sa-a-ra, ca-o-eye, du-e-lo, etc. Other digraphs As already said, digraph occurs when two consonants together form a single sound. In the cases of: rr, ss, sc, sç, xs, and xc they must be separated. Examples: bar-ro, as-sun-to, guer-ra, sos-se-go, des-çam, cresçço, etc. Consonant meetings With the exception of the cases already mentioned, where the second consonant is L or R, in other cases the separation occurs. Examples: de-cep-tion, ab-do-me, sub-ma-ri-no, ap-ti-dar, con-vic-tion, as-tu-to, rit-mo, etc. Vowels identical to aa, ee, ii, oo, uu and the consonant groups cc, cc, are also separated. Examples: Sa-a-ra, com-pre-en, do-i-ta, vo-o, pa-ra-cu-u-ba; oc-cyclopentyl, in-fec-dog, etc.
